UNILAG Postgraduate School (SPGS)

UNILAG Postgraduate School (SPGS) was established by Senate to coordinate and develop research studies through a formalized University-wide programme.

In pursuance of this mandate, the school has trained thousands of staff for the Nigerian industries, Universities in Nigeria and abroad, the Nigeria’s National Universities Commission, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of educacation, the armed forces, federal and state government and international agencies, as well as private establishments.

UNILAG Postgraduate admission capacity is the total number of candidates the school can admit per academic session.

According to Academia.com.ng, statistics shows that a total of 12,581 students were admitted into UNILAG SPGS in the 2012/2013 academic session.

Arguably, this is the highest number of students the school has ever admitted for one academic session.

Meanwhile, the total number of candidates that applied for UNILAG Postgraduate Admission in that 2012/2013 academic session was 18,458.

What this means is that UNILAG postgraduate admission capacity is 12,581.

UNILAG Postgraduate Available Courses

UNILAG Postgraduate School has a wide variety of courses ranging from academic to professional courses.

Most of the courses are available for Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master Degree, Master of Philosophy (MPHIL) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes.

UNILAG Postgraduate Brochure

UNILAG Postgraduate Brochure, also known as Prospectus, is a book that contains all the courses offered in UNILAG SPGS, their admission requirements, duration of study, career prospect and the breakdown of courses to be done per semester.

Meanwhile, the hard copy of the brochure is not available to applicants as the school issues it to only successfully admitted candidates.

However, this post is more or less the soft copy version of the prospectus because the content is curated from the brochure.

UNILAG Postgraduate Academic Calendar

The academic calendar of UNILAG SPGS is the programme of events in an academic session.

The 2019/2020 academic calendar is not yet available because the session has not commenced yet.

Meanwhile, the 2018/2019 academic calendar started on Monday, March 4, 2019 and ended on Wednesday, 18th September, 2019.

UNILAG Postgraduate Fees

UNILAG Postgraduate Fees comprises of the school fees and acceptance fees, which is part of the compulsory charges.

UNILAG Postgraduate School Fees

UNILAG Postgraduate School fees varies from course to course. In other words, there is no fixed amount for all courses.

For example, the school fees of UNILAG MBA programme is N250,000 for Full Time, N450,000 for Part Time, and N1,800,000 for Executive.

Meanwhile, the fees for Master of Science in Production and Operations Management is N75,000 for Full Time and N150,000 for Part Time.

UNILAG Postgraduate Acceptance Fees

After being offered admission, successful candidates are expected to pay the acceptance fee as a sign of acceptance of the offer.

Failure to pay the acceptance fee is tantamount to forfeiture of the admission. For those that intend to defer the admission for one reason or the other, you are hereby advised to pay the acceptance fees before applying for that.

Unlike the school fees, acceptance fees is fixed and it’s the same for all courses and programmes.

Currently, the acceptance fee is N64,500 only for all.

UNILAG Postgraduate Admission Requirements

An applicant for admission to a programme shall be:

  1. A person who possess a Bachelors’s degree of this University or any approved University;
  2. A person who holds other qualification(s) recognized by senate of the University of Lagos;
  3. In addition to (i) and (ii) above, an applicant may be required, as a condition for admission, to undergo a selection process in the form of written and/or oral examinations.

Note that the requirements above are the general admission requirements for admission into any course in UNILAG SPGS.

However, there is a specific admission requirements for each course and candidates applying for any of the courses must have the specific admission requirements for that course in addition to the general admission requirements above.

For instance, the specific admission requirements for Master of Philosophy (MPHIL) in Psychology is:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minimum of Second Class Upper or its equivalent from the University of Lagos or any other recognised University
  • Master degree in Psychology with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 from the University of Lagos or any other recognised University; 

Therefore, any candidate applying for MPHIL in Psychology must have this specific admission requirements in addition to the general admission requirements.

UNILAG Postgraduate Admission Procedure

Before one can be offered admission into UNILAG SPGS, there are procedures the school follows.

The first step is the sales of postgraduate application forms. Every candidate that is interested in gaining admission into the School of Postgraduate Studies must first of all obtain the Admission Form from UNILAG Postgraduate Application Portal.

Secondly, after the sales of the application form, the school will conduct an entrance exam for all candidates applying for PGD and Master Degree in all courses.

Thirdly, candidates who score up to the required cut off mark for their courses are given admission and invited for final screening which has to do with the inspection of their credentials to ensure that they meet the general and specific admission requirements for their courses.

Eventually, successfully screened candidates are given the go ahead to pay the acceptance fee which is a sign of acceptance of the admission.

This is immediately followed by the payment of school fees and the commencement of lectures.

The sale of the application form usually close two months after the commencement of the sales of the form.

Since the 2020/2021 Postgraduate Form is not out, we can’t give specific deadline for the sales of the form

Please note that a hard copy of the application form with photocopies of your credentials have to be submitted to the department you are applying for. Hence, the registration process does not end with just filling of the form online. You have to come to the school to submit the hard copies regardless of where you are.

UNILAG Postgraduate Entrance Exam

As already stated above, UNILAG Postgraduate Entrance Exam is one of the UNILAG Postgraduate Admission Procedures.

In other words, all applicants for Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master Degree, and Master of Philosophy (MPHIL) must seat for the entrance exam which usually comes up few weeks after the closure of UNILAG Postgraduate Application Portal.

The entrance exam is more or less an aptitude test used to screen out some of the applicants competing for the university’s admission capacity.

UNILAG Postgraduate Aptitude Test

UNILAG Postgraduate Aptitude tests are used to determine candidate’s mental ability/potential to cope with Postgraduate studies in the school.

It is also used to select the best candidates out of the over 20,000 candidates that are usually competing for the school’s 12,581 admission capacity.

UNILAG Postgraduate Aptitude Test comprises of two types which are:

  • Computer Based Test (CBT)
  • Paper Based Test

Computer Based Test (CBT)

ComputerBased Testing (CBT) is simply taking a test on a computer, using the keyboard and mouse to “flip through” and “answer” your test questions that appear on a computer monitor.

lnterestingly, the aptitude test for most of UNILAG Postgraduate Courses and programmes are CBT.

Paper Based Test

Paper Based Test is a hand written aptitude test which could be either objective questions or theory questions or both.

The entrance exam for most of the academic courses are paper based test.

How to Print UNILAG Postgraduate Exam Pass

For a candidate to partake in the entrance exam, such a person must have the exam pass with the photograph and other detail boldly printed on it.

After the close of the sales of the application form, the school of postgraduate studies will release the exam pass for printing.

Here is a step on how to print UNILAG Postgraduate exam pass:

  • Login to UNILAG Application portal with your username and password.
  • Click on the “Print Exam Pass” button.

UNILAG Postgraduate Result

UNILAG Postgraduate result determines your chance of being admitted. If your score is up to the cut off mark or above it, you will be given admission.

On the other hand, if your score is below the cut off mark, you might not be admitted.

When Will UNILAG Postgraduate Result be Out?

UNILAG Postgraduate result is usually released few months after the entrance exam.

Specifically, the result usually comes out around November/December.

How to Check UNILAG Postgraduate Result

First of all, note that you don’t need any pin nor card to check UNILAG Postgraduate result. In other words, it doesn’t cost you anything to check your result.

All you need to check your result are your username and password. Recall that your username and password were generated for you when you were obtaining the postgraduate form.

However, if for any reason you can’t have access to your username and/or password, then you will need to retrieve your username and/or password, as the case may be.

Please note that password/username retrieval can only be done on the school’s portal. Just go to the login page of the school and click on ‘lost password’ and follow the instructions to retrieve or create a new password or username.

UNILAG Postgraduate Cut Off Mark is the minimum mark a candidate must score before he/she can be offered admission into a particular course.

UNILAG Postgraduate Cut Off Mark is not something that is permanently fixed. In other words, it varies from course to course and changes every year.

The followings are the factors that determine UNILAG Postgraduate Cut Off Mark of a Department:

  • Admission Capacity of the Department

How Many Students Are in UNILAG?

UNILAG has one of the largest student populations in any university in Nigeria.

Specifically, the school has a total of 57,183 students which comprises of 44,602 undergraduate students and 12,581 postgraduate students.

Can HND Holder Apply For PGD in UNILAG?

UNILAG does not accept HND for postgraduate diploma(PGD) Programme for almost all of its academic masters Programme. The only course I know that accepts HND for its postgraduate diploma Programme is Biomedical Engineering.

However, there are professional masters Programme you can do straight with your HND without needing to do a postgraduate diploma to be qualified. 

Some of these professional masters include MBA, Master of Maritime Administration and Communication Studies, etc.

If you’ve got upper credit and above with your HND then your chances of getting the admission will be the same as those applying with a Bsc certificate. Work experiences are an added advantage.

Can You Turn A HND Into A Degree?

Yes! You can convert your HND to a Degree. There are some universities, most especially private, that run conversion from HND to a Degree.

However, UNILAG does not do such.

Can I Do Masters With a 3rd Class Degree?

Yes! You can do Masters with a 3rd class degree. In most of the professional masters, no particular class of degree is specified as a requirement. Consequently, candidates with a 3rd class degree are eligible to apply.

How Many Years Is a Master Degree?

The duration of master degree in UNILAG is approximately 9 months for full time, while the duration of part time is approximately 1 year and 6 months.
